Amplifying AI: Lucy M.

Welcoming a high school English class to the school library sounds like something out of the movies, especially when the library looks nothing short of a university-level facility like at NHS. The scenario sounds dreamy, but then there’s reality. Matching twenty-some students to books that ignite their interests quickly is a formidable challenge, even for the most skilled librarian. Lucy Misetic, Teacher Librarian at Noblesville High School, recently turned to artificial intelligence to help juniors select memoirs for a unit in their Literature & Composition classes. First, she downloaded a list of titles from the NHS Library memoir collection through Follett Destiny, our online library catalog. She then logged into her MagicSchool educator account to create a virtual room for students to interact with Raina, MagicSchool’s AI chatbot. Amplifying AI: Emily D.

Can you recall studying Shakespeare in middle school? If you’re like me, you remember feeling completely lost. I thought the words sounded nice when spoken out loud, but I couldn’t tell you what anything meant. NWMS Seventh Grade ELA Teacher Emily Denny recognizes that interpreting Shakespeare is difficult for most 12 and 13-year-olds, and there was nothing unique about my experience. Her approach is to scaffold the learning and create opportunities for students to play with the language. A district AI Ambassadors group member, Emily recently attended the Hoosier Educational Computer Coordinators annual conference. An "AI Detectives with Macbeth" session got her thinking about using artificial intelligence with her Bridges class. Her students have put Brutus from Julius Caesar on trial in previous years. Amplifying AI: David L.

I knew I wanted David LaFollette's voice on this blog. David teaches six technology classes daily at White River Elementary, and his lessons are always student-centered and future-focused. So when I reached out to ask if he has been facilitating lessons related to artificial intelligence, I already knew the answer. David has been pulling from two curriculums to customize lessons for his students: Code.org and Common Sense Media. The Code.org unit, How AI Makes Decisions, focuses on computer science to make predictions. Code.org markets as being for grades 3 to 8, but David has found ways to adjust and edit the content for 2nd grade. An advocate for AI and Media Literacy, David sees value in starting in younger grades. As an aside, David observes that students in older grades seem to be more nervous about AI.
