Differentiate Using Canvas Mastery Paths

Differentiating Instruction with Canvas

Ever wondered how to differentiate your lessons in Canvas? How can you make sure your students learn and understand what you are teaching? The students can be given different assignments based on the score they receive on a Canvas assignment. Mastery Path is the way to go.
Based on a student's responses to an assignment or quiz you can send that student to different assignments. Let's say a student gets everything correct on an assignment and shows that they have mastered a topic, we can use Mastery Paths to send that student onto the next unit or assignment. What if the student shows that they don’t understand, well you can use the Mastery Paths activity to remediate them during the lesson, giving them a totally different assignment for the lesson.

How to get started

When inputting the details of the assignment you can click the mastery paths tab at the top of the assignment details. Once you have selected Mastery Paths you can then add the assignments that you want them to do next by clicking the + tab. You may also adjust the score needed to move to each of the assignments you want your students to complete. In the example below, if they receive a 75% or above they will move to the next lesson, if they get between a 50%-75% they will complete an assignment before retaking the first assignment, and if they get less than 50% will complete two assignments before retaking the assignment. You can differentiate as little or as much as you want. Many times I will have the same assignments for anyone receiving less than 75% by putting the same assignments in for both sections below 75%.

  1. This is really cool. Is it time intensive to set up?

    1. It's not too bad if you already know what you want the paths to look like. Happy to walk you through it in person! Just send me an email.

  2. This could be a game changer in classes where there is a wide range of understanding on certain topics. I often have the hardest time keeping up with my high-flyers. I don't want them to get to the point where they "have nothing to do." Thanks for this!
