Mote

How to Use Mote in the Classroom

The Mote app is a great way to give audio directions to striving learners or EL students. It’s also a great way to give feedback to all students. Here are directions on how to get started:
  1. Add the Mote extension to Google Chrome.
  2. Once you have the Mote extension added, you can use it in any Google app (Docs, Slides, Sheets, etc).
  3. To begin, you can open the Google app that you want to use. You should see the Mote logo along the top of the screen.
  4. The first time you use Mote, you will need to create a free account. You can connect your Google Drive so audio clips will be saved in your Drive.
  5. When you are ready, you can click on the Mote logo and begin recording. You have a 5 minute time limit and you can move the box around the screen so you can read what is on your screen.
  6. When finished, click on the purple check mark and you can preview your audio. If you are satisfied with your audio, you can hit insert.
  7. The audio will save into your Drive and will insert the Mote logo into your Slide. From there you can move it to where you would like.
  8. If you are using Google Docs, you can highlight where you want to leave your comment and the Mote logo should appear to the right. When finished recording, your audio will be linked into the document so students can click and listen.
  9. Watch my 3 minute Loom to see what this looks like!

  3. I can see how useful this would be for kids that are auditory learners or are working remotely - just hearing their teacher's instructions would make them feel more connected to the online work!

    1. I agree-- that personal connection is often missing from online assignments

  4. So great to learn about this extension! One of my favorites is Loom. It allows me to make videos that share my screen and also include my face. When students are learning, seeing the teacher on the screen just makes it more personal and that personal connection makes the difference in how they receive it.

  5. Also Boomerang for Gmail. Schedule messages to send later, have messages reappear in your inbox later, and even share your calendar when trying to come up with good meeting times!
