8th Grade Narrative Writing Celebration

I had the pleasure of attending the 8th Grade Narrative Writing Celebration at Noblesville East Middle Schools the day before fall break. I left the event astounded at the students' work and feeling hopeful about the possibilities with artificial intelligence tools in the classroom. I asked Kelly Bonifield, Instructional Coach at NEMS, to share more about this project.

Prompt for students
"Imagine your character is at a summer camp. Write a narrative piece that explores one memorable experience they had. This writing should focus on one location at the camp and at least one central conflict that they overcome or resolve."

Process
From the beginning to the end of this 16-day unit, students were immersed in a writing workshop, a collaborative and creative process where they generated ideas, drafted multiple stories and revised & edited their work before publication. Students started the writing process by developing one or more compelling characters. Only when the student's character was developed did students learn their character would be attending a sleepaway camp! The unit progression, mini-lessons, and small group conferences were heavily influenced by our work with Kate Roberts and resources found in Writers Read Better by Colleen Cruz and The Writing Strategies Book by Jennifer Serravallo.

Product
After revision and editing, students were ready to publish. Students utilized Canva's AI image generator to design the covers of their books. This cutting-edge technology helped bring students' creative visions to life. AI easily customized and generated visually striking cover designs that captured the essence of their written works.

I loved talking with the students about their experiences. And, of course, I met some young YouTubers while moving from table to table. It was unanimous: Canva AI added a powerful element to this project. I'm already looking forward to reading their stories next year.
