Second Grade pro tips

Second-grade teacher Adrienne Blackburn is too modest to call them pro tips, but I do! Here are three takeaways I had from a recent Google Meet call with Hinkle Creek Second Grade Teacher Adrienne Blackburn.

Canva buttons on Canvas

"Less is more" describes Adrienne's approach to Canvas in second grade. Yes, and yes! Adrienne creates colorful buttons for her Canvas homepage with her Canva Teacher account. This aids students with navigating her homepage more efficiently. She uses Canvas to deliver eLearning Day lesson plans. From Canvas, she links to supplemental resources such as Brain Pop and epic. To help her families prepare, she takes a screenshot of her agenda page in Canvas and emails it to parents. It's a small move that her students' parents appreciate greatly.

Learning A to Z library

Each K-3 classroom teacher in Noblesville Schools has a subscription to Raz Plus. While most are familiar with the Raz Kids student-facing side, not everyone is aware of the Reading A to Z library for teaching materials. Adrienne regularly visits Raz Plus to locate readers' theater scripts and texts for shared reading. Here is a video showing how, though the steps could be more intuitive. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Accessibility features

Adrienne appreciates the print editions of Scholastic News and Scholastic Storyworks 2 that arrive monthly in her mailbox. There is something to be said for kids interacting with a physical text. Adrienne, however, prefers to use paper copies in tandem with digital versions of current issues. The read-aloud feature supports struggling readers in the room. She also models the use of Scholastic's annotation features to aid students with attacking nonfiction texts. While printing ready-to-go exit slips through the Reveal Math online platform is nice, Adrienne also likes to assign digitally. By choosing online assessments, students can have the questions read to them.
