The Digital Media Website Your Classroom is Missing
The website the Kid Should See This houses a collection of over 5,000 educational videos for kids vetted by teachers and parents just like you! Here are five ideas for using this digital resource in your classroom this week.Phenomena-based instruction:
The Kids Should See This has many science videos. As Indiana transitions to new science standards in 2023-2024, the website is an excellent resource for locating phenomena-based prompts to get students excited to discuss and explore Science. Check out Flash flooding after drought, a demonstration, or Jartopia creates a lake ecosphere in a sealed jar as a springboard for your next scientific inquiry.
Community Builder:
Ask students to search the library for a video they think the class would like to watch. Take time for each student to share their video and explain to the class why the video interested them. Get ready to learn a lot about your students in this activity.
Enrichment:
Embed a content-specific video playlist into your Canvas page for early finishers. The Kids Should see this makes it easy to find playlists based on tags associated with each video. Some of these tags include “1700s”, “piano,” “machines,” and hundreds more.
Lame Duck Days:
A term coined by the Cult of Pedagogy, lame duck days are those days with alternative schedules, leading up to breaks or during standardized testing. Engage students in activities such as drawing a maze, folding origami stars, or learning a mathematical card trick to unwind after a long day of iLearn testing. The website contains a playlist of over 500 how-to videos!
Mini-Lessons:
The robust animation section of the Kids Should See hosts many engaging and thought-provoking stories that are only 2-4 minutes long. These videos could be used to practice ELA skills such as mood, elements of setting, characterization, and symbols! Take a few minutes to watch The Pits: An avocado searches for its other half, and list all the skills you could teach with the short clip.
